CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE SAND IN VELOSO BEACH
Veloso beach is the last one that can be reached by car from the south part of Ilhabela. This beach is around 300m after Curral Beach and, unlike this one, it’s a quite peaceful beach.
The beach is about 15 meters wide and 200 meters long, with calm and clean waters. It is very much frequented by divers, being on this beach the ships Tritão and Dorth, which wrecked in 1884.
The beach is surrounded by bush forest vegetation, fruit trees and a rocky shore.
The darker sand is due to the great amount of the rare monazite ore, consisting of metal phosphates. Such sands are well known for their supposed therapeutic effects, being popularly used in the arthritis and inflammation treatment and, when spread over the skin, it produces a radiation that, according to supporters of the idea, stimulates the skin and favors blood flow in the affected region. Even though there is no scientific proof about the healing effects of this type of sand, the sea, the sun and resting certainly only bring benefits to the body and mind.
Also, for those who make use of the beach to have more comfort, the City Hall has installed a natural shower in front of the beach, which is supplied by the Veloso waterfall waters, 200m away from the hotel.
